Epsom & Ewell Borough Council (EEBC) has launched a new bursary scheme to help Ukrainian families living in the borough gain new skills, access training opportunities and improve their employment prospects. 

The council’s Employment and Upskilling Bursary will support current and former Homes for Ukraine guests by helping to cover the costs of vocational training and accredited courses, including up to £750 towards course fees, essential materials and examination costs. The scheme aims to improve employment opportunities by helping applicants build on their existing skills and qualifications and overcome barriers to entering the UK workforce. 

In addition, a smaller Community Connections Bursary will be available for children and young people to take part in activities outside of school. These grants of up to £350 are designed to support community integration, encourage participation in local activities and help young people build friendships and connections within the borough. 

Funding for the scheme is limited, so bursaries will be allocated to eligible applicants on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The bursary is the latest initiative in EEBC's ongoing programme of support for the Ukrainian community. Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, the council has welcomed more than 250 people through the Homes for Ukraine scheme and has worked closely with host families across the borough throughout their sponsorship journeys. 

Over the past four years, EEBC has delivered a wide range of support services and community initiatives. These have included drop-in sessions for those seeking private accommodation, a dedicated helpdesk providing practical advice and assistance, the borough's first Festival of Ukraine, creative wellbeing sessions, and weekly Ukrainian language classes for young children to help them maintain their language and cultural heritage while settling into life in the UK. 

The council also works closely with Epsom and Ewell Refugee Network who provide support to those on the Homes for Ukraine Scheme. They have also independently provided social trips to support community integration.

"This bursary is a practical investment in people's futures. It will help Ukrainian residents in Epsom and Ewell gain valuable skills, qualifications and experience that can open doors to enjoyable and fulfilling employment, and greater financial independence. 

"We remain committed to supporting those who have been forced to leave their homes because of the war in Ukraine. I am continually inspired by the courage and resilience shown by Ukrainian families living in the borough. I am pleased the Council is able to offer this bursary to help people build secure, independent and fulfilling lives as part of our community here in Epsom and Ewell."
